One thing that I learned quite early in life is that
pursuing hobbies always brings joy to one’s life.
During my school days, I invested much energy and time
in developing various hobbies like singing, painting, writing, and reading.
I realized that I always had something to engage
myself in, and that supported my introverted self. It was like quenching the
thirst of my reticence through creative activities.
Over time, I learned to balance hobbies and academics
so that my spare time would be occupied with hobbies when I was not studying.
I carried those hobbies to my college, and very soon,
I realized that there were very few like-minded people.
Instead of getting involved in hostel or college
politics or gossiping with a group of girls, I tried to explore my hobbies and
derived an inexplicable happiness from them.
I don’t support being anti-social in college life, but
being with a group that doesn’t nurture your potential is simply a waste of
time, and everyone should be very judicious about how they utilize their time
in their college days.
The outcome of any creative pursuit is always so
satisfying. Anything originating from the purity of souls touches the hearts of
many.
With the passage of time, I realized that someone can
never be bored in his life if he has learned to enjoy his own company. This
skill of enjoying my company came in handy when I started living abroad, where
the society wasn’t social or interactive at all. By then, I had developed a
level of comfort in spending time in my own company.
Learning Diamond painting has always been on my bucket
list, and I am happy to say that I got to explore that this year.
I had already purchased some diamond painting kits but
always thought it to be a work of patience and precision, which it is actually,
but one day, my inner self motivated me to try this after getting help from a
YouTube video.
A diamond painting kit comes with
- a
canvas with small squares with numbers or letters written on it. These
small squares have glue in them
- holder;
diamonds are placed on it
- a
small wax strip as a glue for sticking diamonds to the tip of the pen
- a
pen for placing diamonds on the canvas

Diamonds are sealed in different packets with numbers
or letters written on them. You’ve to map these numbers or letters of the
diamonds to those of the numbers or letters on the canvas and place the diamonds
accordingly.
I started with the canvas of the smallest dimensions,
13cm * 18cm — A hummingbird, and it took me around 1 hour to complete it.

After completing my first diamond painting, my
confidence increased, and I felt that I should try again. I purchased some more
kits of the same dimensions 13cm*18cm and started working on them.
Unlike the first painting, other paintings took more
time ( between 2 hours and 3 hours)because of more canvas coverage.
| Second Diamond Painting by the Author completed on 06.11 — A rabbit with its baby |
| Third Diamond Painting by the Author completed on 11.11 — Face of a Cute Kitten |
I ordered a few kits of dimensions 20cm*20cm and
20cm*30cm and tried my hands on them. Note: I was not completing these
paintings at a stretch; otherwise, it would have been too hectic.

From trying something new like the Diamond painting, I
realized that we must not jump to conclusions about anything when we are
exploring the unknown.
The perception of the Diamond painting being so tricky
or challenging didn’t let me try it while the diamond painting kit lay idle in
my drawer. Such a perception was broken after I started working on it.
So, let’s not get chained up by our prejudices or
preconceived notions and look at the world from the perspective of absolute
truth.
What did you try new this year? I would love to hear
about it.

I loved your Diamond paintings , the 3-D effect makes them so realistic and the shading achieved adds depth. It may not be as tough as it appears with these kits but must need focus and thats adds to it being a good exercise for busting stress. I remember doing something similar with cross stitch designs on this special matty fabric.I created a cushion cover and some wall decor for my home in my student days.
ReplyDeleteI never heard of diamond painting before, but this post gave me big time FOMO as I’ve been so busy with so many things in life and totally would’ve given it a shot if I’d known sooner 😊.
ReplyDeleteI have tried all sorts of embroidery canvases, but it is the first time I am hearing about diamond painting. It looks beautiful and you have done so many. Thank you for sharing this. I am looking for something new to start. Is it available on Amazon?
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing! Your paintings are absolutely stunning! When I was in school, once a friend's mother told us that how can a person ever get bored, there is so much to learn and do in this world. And those words always stuck with me. And this post reminded me of those words again.
ReplyDeleteI feel like this is one of those things you start and suddenly two hours have flown by. I actually bought a kit and need to try it for myself
ReplyDeleteI like the paintings, especially of the hummingbird and the rabbits. And yes, no point in being with a group that doesn't nurture your growth or encourages you to become a better version of yourself. This was a nice post to read. More power to creative pursuits.
ReplyDeleteI love how you’ve embraced diamond painting as a way to nurture your creativity and find joy in solitude. I resonate with the idea that hobbies can be a soulful escape and a path to self-discovery.
ReplyDeleteThank you for introducing me to Diamond Paintings. Your creations are so artful and beautiful. I am sure they require a lot of patience to make and hence must feel very therapeutic . Mayuri/Sirimiri
ReplyDeleteThat painting of Brighton Beach is magnificent! So are all of them but that one literally stopped me on my tracks! I love diamond painting and use my kid's kits.
ReplyDeletePaintings are amazing!!! This must be very effective for improving concentration and patience. I guess my patience will wear out by the time, I am done halfway. But I would like to get my hand s on some big jigsaw puzzles like 1000 pieces or something. That I am quite keen to get on eith!.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very unique hobby. All the artworks are fabulous, especially the kitten one. I was not that aware of diamond painting before.
ReplyDeleteOMG... this is totally something different for me and honestly I try multiple varieties of paintings nd art work in my free time but never got to know about diamond painting.... it is indeed something brilliant and what I believe its not just an art but an art form which can help you bring lot of patience in life. Bravo Girl Bravo. Love you
ReplyDeleteLove that you're diving into a hobby that I've had my eye on too—seems such a relaxing, satisfying activity. The way you describe picking drills and working on the canvas really makes me want to try it myself asap
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I've never heard of diamond paintings, and unlike you, I'm not an art/craft person. Hats off to your patience in doing these, esp the 2 kittens; they look quite challenging to me.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of diamond painting. These looks amazing. I have wasted enough time in my life talking ! Though I have taken to crochet in a big way, give me a listener on the other end!
ReplyDeleteWow that so beautiful. I was not aware about Diamond Painting. Your blog has introduced me with another activity that I have to try now.
ReplyDeleteThese paintings are so beautiful! Definitely doesn't look like the hand of someone not trained at the art. I like to pursue my hobbies too over whiling away time. This would make a great gift for my daughter too. Will check if I can find something like these kits in India.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I am hearing about diamond painting. Your choice of designs is lovely. The cat reminds me of one I cross-stitched for my daughter.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of it before but your works look absolutely beautiful. I think I want to try this out
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed by your creativity. Your blog opened a new creative artwork for me. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of diamond painting before, but after seeing your work, I really feel like trying it! I’ve done a similar style of painting where you match paint with numbers, and this reminds me of that, only shinier and more intricate. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI never knew about diamond painting. The new thing I learnt this year and which I love, is Mahjong.
