Sharing your life with a YOUNGER you

Would you go back to the
younger, beautiful, and stronger version of yourself?
And this time, without
time traveling or navigating to your past using a Time Machine, but by staying
in the present.
You’ve to take The
Substance which works by dividing the cells genetically and there comes a
younger version of yourself. The Substance kit contains an activator,
food matrix, stabilizer, and a tube for switching forms. There are certain
rules for using these components.
1. Activator: It
can be used only once which starts the process of dividing the cells
genetically from you, who is the matrix.
2. Food
Matrix: After the new form comes out of your body,
you’ve to provide food to your old body externally for 7 days through this food
matrix.
3. Stabilizer:
To
stabilize the new form, you’ve to get the fluid from the old form and use one
shot every day for 7 days.
4. Tube
for switching: This is used to switch between the forms
every 7 days without any exception
5. If you don’t switch
between the forms every 7 days, the other form suffers a loss and this loss is
irreparable.
6. Remember you’re the
one and the primary body.
Would you love to live in
the present with your younger self or with your present self?

I’ve been following a ritual of watching movies with my husband every Friday night and we watched “The Substance (2024)”. The above concept came from there.
The protagonist of the
movie, Elisabeth Sparkle, a talented and famous fitness trainer, faces a
downturn in her career as she reaches the age of 50. The director of the TV
show that stars Elisabeth puts up an advertisement looking for a substitute for
Elisabeth, which stresses her.
An accident sent her to
the hospital, the doctor, after checking, said that she was fine to leave while
the nurse checked something on her backbone and said that she was the right
candidate for the experiment. He handed her a pen drive when she was leaving.
She came home to check
the pen drive to find the concept of The Substance. Initially, she found it too
risky to go for it but later changed her mind to call the number written on the
pen drive. She was given information about where to location to pick up.
One morning, she received
the parcel with the key to the building and locker where she would get the
product. She went to the address to collect her parcel, returned home, and
activated her younger self, Sue who replaced Elisabeth and started working as the
fitness instructor of “Pump it up”

Sue, receives her name,
and fame and lives the busy and hustling life of her dream and 7 days seem to
pass in the nick of time for her. On the contrary, Elisabeth lived a boring and
lonely life and 7 days seemed too hard for her to pass. On these days, she
cleaned the apartment, watched TV, and collected The Substance kit from the
given address.
This switch between the
two forms had a different impact on Elisabeth and Sue making Elisabeth grow
more inferior to her form and envious of her counterpart, Sue whereas Sue
longed for more days to enjoy her happening life.
As a result of this
longing, Sue broke the rule of switching to Elisabeth at the end of the 7th day
and lived more on the stabilizing fluid taken from the body of Elisabeth which
caused Elisabeth to grow older. This created inconvenience, and jealousy and
angered Elisabeth who thought of punishing Sue by eating more than required.

This tussle between both
forms resulted in the ultimate harm to Elisabeth when Sue forgot that she was
not a different body but a form of Elisabeth. She once again broke the rule of
changing to her old form by living as Sue for more than 3 months with the help
of activator fluid drawn from Elisabeth’s body.
Unable to bear the
extreme pain and sudden old age caused by Sue’s selfish actions, Elisabeth
called the customer care number of the Substance to enquire if could come back
to her original form to which she received a negative response. She decided to
terminate this experience and for the last time went to the location to get the
parcel.
While injecting the fluid
of termination into Sue’s body, she was reminded of her dreams of performing on
a big stage before of a huge audience which Sue was about to do for New Year’s
Eve. She stopped injecting the entire fluid of termination into Sue, and this
caused Sue to come to her senses.
The syringe of
termination, on the ground, enraged Sue, and she started to hit Elisabeth, eventually killing her without realizing that she could no longer get
stabilizing fluid to keep her alive. She then went to the venue to get ready
for the stage show. She started feeling unwell and found out her teeth were falling
followed by her ears. She rushed to her home to fix it.
At home, she frantically
called customer care of The Substance to get the stabilizing fluid but got the
response that it could only be generated from the original body, the matrix. In
a hurry, she broke the rule again to use the activator, causing division
for another time.
There came a distorted
form from the body of Sue, which was a combination of Elisabeth and Sue,
resembling a monster; it was Monstro Elisasue. Still, her dream to perform on
the stage was unfulfilled, Elisasue rushed to the venue to perform on stage.
Her appearance shocked everyone and the movie ended on a sad note with Elisasue
disintegrating and disappearing from the world.
This movie comes under
the genre of sci-fi and body horror. There are a lot of disturbing scenes in
the movie shown with extreme detail. I liked the way the story progressed
without much dialogue, songs, or romance to distract from the main idea. I would
give a rating of 9/10.
This movie sends home the
following messages
1. Balance is the key to
a happy and peaceful life.
2. If you don’t respect
what you’ve now, it’ll not take much time for you to lose what you have.
3. The outcome of greed
is always negative.
What is the recent movie
that you watched recently? I would love to hear more about it in the comment
section.

What a gripping concept and fascinating exploration of identity, envy, and the fragile balance we share with ourselves!
ReplyDeleteThe review of The Substance reads like a blend of sci-fi and poetic introspection—very well summarized.
Elisabeth and Sue’s dynamic reminded me how easily we can become our own rivals when we chase youth without wisdom.
The metaphor of switching selves is chilling yet brilliant—it raises deep questions about self-worth and permanence.
Your interpretation of the movie’s core messages was thoughtful—especially the reminder that “greed ruins all.”
I loved how you dissected the rules of The Substance; it made the plot easy to follow even for someone new to the film.
The way Elisabeth’s decline is portrayed hits hard—it’s a warning wrapped in a surreal sci-fi premise.
Also, kudos for spotlighting a genre not often explored in blog reviews—body horror deserves more analytical takes!
That was scary! Your detailed review helped me picturize the movie and send a choll fown my spine. Well, I hardly watch sci-fi movies specially thay belong to the horror genre but this movie sounded quite unique.
ReplyDeleteI think most of us would jump at the idea of having back our younger self but to live with that younger self is indeed a thought provoking idea. Thank you for reviewing "The substance" for us.I am very intrigues by the plot and how the story unfolds but the fact that it has disturbing images is kind of horrifying for me and the only thing that would pt me off from watching this.
ReplyDeleteWhat a concept! I had watched the trailer, now I would definitely watch the film. Demi Moore is back with a bang at 60.
ReplyDeleteThe Substance, seems to be a scary movie. Living alone, I steer clear of anything spooky, so i think I will give this a pass. My poison is only Romcoms, anyday.
ReplyDeleteThis touched my heart deeply. Your vulnerability in sharing such a profound experience is incredibly brave. It truly resonates how grief can reveal unexpected strengths and connections. Thank you for opening up and reminding us that healing is a journey, not a destination.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this. It took me a while to make such an honest reflection. It reminds me that even painful connections can serve a deeper purpose, guiding us toward growth and clarity.
ReplyDeleteI initially thought it was a humour piece until I discovered it was a sci-fi and horror movie. I would like to see this one.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of this but what an unusual recommendation and the theme is mind-blowing. Thank you for the recommendation. Also I recently watched The Tourist Family it's a beautiful movie.
ReplyDeleteWhen I started reading it I was confused if it is some method to embrace younger self because I have heard of the movie The Substance, as I read through I got hold of it.
ReplyDeleteThis movie has some important food for thought in it's plot. Thank you for sharing them with us. It is indeed important to be happy with what we have. Mayuri/Sirimiri
ReplyDeleteThe movie sounds interesting but since you mentioned it has disturbing scenes I think I will skip this
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry but I didn't read after you introduced the movie plot. It sounds intriguing and I wouldn't want to know what to expect. Am going to watch it soon.
ReplyDeleteOh I liked the plot and I didn't want any spoilers though.
ReplyDeleteI have heard about the movie but I have not seen it yet. Sometimes we want to go back to when we were young. That is more about memories than being obsessed with looking younger.
ReplyDeleteThis movie sounds intense and thought-provoking, I’m really intrigued! Would love to watch it soon, especially after reading your reflections. Thanks for the recommendation!
ReplyDeleteI have seen bits of the movie here and there and it sure gives you goosebumps. Where does this obsession with youth end. We often see living examples of people destroying their bodies for the sake of reversing aging.
ReplyDeleteWhat a creepy story!
